Trogir is a 2400 year old city (700 older than Split!) that was founded by the Greeks (Tragurion) and later because a Roman city. It was a walled city on an island. The walls existed up until Napoleon controlled the area and were removed in an attempt to rid the city of malaria.
Trogir is unique because the entire old town is an UNESCO world heritage site and takes up the entire island. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. It's also connected to the much larger island of Ciovo by a drawbridge.
I like Trogir a lot but I don't want to live in a medieval city. The green market is second only to Split's and the Riva is a lot like most Dalmatian cities where couples and families come out at night stroll up and down for hours.
Every morning while we stayed on Ciovo I walked the old road to Trogir for the market and my early morning espresso. Fond memories.
