Centro Historico
We stayed at the Hotel Catedral a block from the Zocolo. The Hotel, Zocolo and the Cathedral all used to be on the island that was the center of the Aztec empire in the center of a huge lake. The Spanish drained the lake and this area is not the historic district. It's amazing to think we were sleeping where Montezuma used to sleep.
The Zocolo in Mexico City is the second largest city square in the world after Red Square but it's not such a nice place to hang out as it's a stark cold center. It used to have trees and walkways but I don't know why they took them out.
