Teotitlan
Teotitlan is an area west of Oaxaca where native Zapoteca Indians still make textiles the manual way. They use a bog called cochineal that lives in cactuses to create their dye. Only the female bugs are used and when squished make the most brilliant natural dye on earth. This was a huge export until replaced by chemical dyes 100 years ago. When mixed with other stuff (flowers etc.) they can create dyes of all colors. The wool is washed with root that acts as a detergent, spun into yarn then dyed. The wool is then used on a loom to make the textile.
